Mechanical Engineer/KTP Research Associate  [Feb.23, 2010]

Location: Cardiff, Wales, UK

This is a challenging opportunity for an ambitious and talented mechanical engineer to engage and manage a highly innovative research project for Maelgwyn Mineral Services Ltd (MMS).

Established in 1997 and located in Cardiff, Wales, UK, MMS has successfully developed and commercialized a range of patented and proprietary technologies in the field of mineral, chemical and waste processing. As part of the continued development, a strategic, two-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) has been established between MMS and Cardiff University.

The appointed individual is expected to investigate the operational characteristics of newly developed prototype equipment and assist with the optimization of the design for best performance as well as assist in the development of a full scale prototype for eventual commercialisation. The work will be based at the company’s head office in Cardiff but may also necessitate trips to company’s facilities overseas & client locations and to Cardiff University. It is anticipated that successful candidate will be positively considered for a permanent position with MMS on completion of the KTP program.

To be successful in this post you must have a 1st or 2.1 Honours or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering or a suitable technical discipline. You should also have excellent computing skills including the effective handling of Microsoft office Suite and Computer Aided Drafting packages. Previous experience working in a laboratory environment with reasonable exposure to mechanical design and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) modelling are essential for the right candidate.

Knowledge/ Exposure to the mineral processing (especially comminution / grinding processes) will be well regarded for this position. Strong communication skills including report writing, and the ability to work as part of a small team are essential for this post. Non-EU applicants must demonstrate their eligibility to live and work in the United Kingdom.

The reward package includes a competitive salary and a separate personal training and development budget of £3500, which includes the opportunity to study for a higher degree.
