Production Metallugist - Hydromet  [Apr.29, 2008]

Location: SA, Australia

The future has never looked more exciting at Olympic Dam, Australia's largest single underground mine and minerals processing operation. A copper/uranium mine, Olympic Dam is located 560 kilometres north of Adelaide and processes ore through to final, refined products of international standing - all on the one site. Nearby Roxby Downs is a modern, fully-equipped township of around 4,500 people which boasts top-class recreational, civic and educational facilities. This is a great place for young professionals to live and work and make their mark - it is also an excellent place for families, with a quarter of the population comprised of school age children.

An exciting career opportunity exists for a Metallurgist within the Olympic Dam Processing Operations. As a Metallurgist in the Hydromet process of the plant, you will be accountable to maximise process efficiency, maintain product quality, provide operational support to improve process stability and coordinate activities across shifts and other departments. This also includes the initiation and implementation of projects designed to improve the performance of the asset.

Some of your core tasks will include:

  • Demonstrate an overriding commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility.
  • Manage day to day metallurgical performance of the Hydromet.
  • Identify and facilitate resolution of daily process issues.
  • Develop operating strategies to optimise and improve plant performance.
  • Manage projects to improve metallurgical and financial performance of the plant.
  • Assist with plant performance and cost management analysis, including performing production forecasting activities, analysis of key cost drivers and assisting with budgeting/forecasting of costs.
  • Review environmental performance and facilitating resolution of issues.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this role you will be degree qualified in either Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering and have proven experience in hydromet/solvent extraction or a similar processing environment ie refinery/electrowinning. A solid understanding of the mining and processing industry is advantageous. This position will suit a good communicator capable to operate at multiple levels and across disciplines and the ability to mentor and influence others in HSEC principles and behaviours.
