Bubble Characterisation in Flotation Systems using Acoustic Monitoring

Description: Dissolved air flotation (DAF), used in drinking and waste water applications, has tremendous potential for resource extraction and waste management in mining, pulp, paper, food processing and biotechnology applications. Effective separation is dependent on the strong attachment of microbubbles to particles; however, interactions are difficult to quantify and simulate, thus DAF designs use empirical models which are not transferable to other industries and hinder innovation. Hence, this project will examine interactions between bubbles and particles in DAF systems for a range of configurations. This will be achieved via the development of novel in situ acoustic monitoring and state-of-the-art visualisation techniques.
