:: First Quantum Minerals US$2.4 billion Copper Project Nears Completion

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) Limited resource optimisation manager, John Gladston, has said significant works have so far been done by the company towards the completion of its Sentinel Mine at Kalumbila in Zambia's North-Western Province.

When commissioned in late 2014, the US$2.4 billion copper project will have the capacity to produce 300,000 tonnes of copper a year. Mr. Gladston said that, construction of the mine was well on course and soon, one of the two 28 foot diameter sag mills, the largest in Africa, to be used for stone crushing would be installed.

Mr. Gladston said the construction of Kalumbila Mine would bring unprecedented development in the creation of employment and secondary business opportunities for entrepreneurs in the North-Western Province. He said the setting up of Multi-Facility Economic Zones (MFEZ) would contribute massively to the creation and growth of medium to large industries and spin-off commercial activities in the region.

However, Mr. Gladston said completing the mine project within the stipulated period of time was contingent on a number of approvals such as resettlement plans to be made by the Government.

Construction of the mine will affect 570 households and some 1,400 farmers.
