:: Chinese Aluminium Smelter Expansion

Antaike Information Development Co., the information arm of the state-owned China Non-ferrous Metals Industry Association, has reported that an aluminium smelter in Ningxia Province, jointly owned by Qingtongxia Aluminium Co. and Alcan Inc. of Canada, is to be expanded. The plant currently has a capacity of 250,000 t/y, which will be increased to 650,000 t/y over the next five years.

Alcan and Qingtongxia formed the joint venture in the middle of last year, with a view to making a 150,000 t/y expansion and closing 50,000 t/y of outdated, Soderberg-based capacity.
