:: Chinese Zinc Smelter Development

Yuguang Gold and Lead Co. Ltd, based in China's Henan Province, has announced that it has commenced construction of a 100,000 t/y zinc smelter at a cost of Yu860 million (US$1 = Yu8.28). Construction is expected to take about 14 months. Yuguang has indicated that the plant is to be used mainly for toll treating imported concentrates, with a view to reexporting the metal.

Yuguang produced 150,000 t of lead in 2002, half of it as toll material, along with 3 t of gold and 350 t of silver. The company increased its lead smelting capacity to 200,000 t/y during 2002.
