:: Outo SAG Grinds Ahead in Thailand

Kingsgate Consolidated's Chatree gold mine in Thailand is using a new high aspect SAG mill from Outokumpu's grinding unit expected to increase plant throughput by over 50% to more than 1.8 million tonnes/year. It features a 6.5-m inside diameter shell, 4.27-m effective grind length and installation motor power of 2,750 kW and has been custom-built for the mine. The contract for the design, manufacture, delivery, installation and commissioning of the new mill has been completed a month ahead of schedule.

This follows the success of Outokumpu's Grinding unit in supplying, maintaining and optimising the performance of the original SAG mill at the Chatree mine, which opened two years ago to develop a 1.2 million ounce deposit. According to Outokumpu's Grinding unit manager Mr Oskar Gustavson, "Our grinding unit provided Kingsgate with a design that rationalised their critical spare parts with those of the existing mill. The new design minimises re-training requirements for the mill, while being approved by the client as robust and reliable. This will reflect in efficient operating costs. Kingsgate have been steadily improving the Chatree plant since initial completion with the installation of some additional CIP tanks last year. They decided to go to two-stage grinding with the inclusion of the new high-aspect SAG Mill and the modification of the existing SAG mill to ball mill duty. Ausenco and we have now worked very closely with the professional team at Ausenco on three projects in this area: the original Chatree mill, the recent Sepon project in Laos and this Chatree expansion."

Contractor Ausenco Engineering won an IE Aust Engineering Excellence Award for Chatree and completed the $US30 million project ahead of schedule and under budget, with help from Outokumpu and another firm, McConnell Dowell.
