:: Giant Smelter To Become Even Bigger - And Better

ABB is refurbishing three of Dubai Aluminum's (DUBAL's) six potlines at one of the biggest aluminum smelters in the world. The upgrade will increase capacity by 30 percent and make DUBALs ambitious and acclaimed environmental performance even better.

The increase in capacity from 536,000 tons to 710,000 tons a year will reinforce DUBAL's position as one of the world's largest producers of high-purity aluminum to the automotive and electronics industries. "The overall improvements to the plant are significant," says DUBAL's CEO, John Boardman. "But most important, it will enhance our ability to meet our customers' growing needs in terms of both product quantity and quality."

This will be the fourth time that DUBAL has increased capacity in the plant's 23-year history. The previous three expansions - the addition of potlines 4, 5 and 6, and three boosters - were all designed, installed and commissioned by ABB. ABB completed each expansion on or ahead of schedule and without interruption to production. The upgrade will make the plant one of the most modern and efficient in the world and enable DUBAL to "substantially improve" its ambitious environmental performance program.

In the two previous expansions (potlines 5 and 6), DUBAL invested more than US$ 120 million in technology directly related to reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency. As a result, the complex - which includes a 1,400 megawatt power generation plant and a desalination plant that can produce 30 million gallons of potable water a day - was one of the first in the industry to win ISO 14001 accreditation.

ABB's track record in supplying products and solutions that reduce plant emissions and increase energy efficiency was a major factor in its winning the new contract.
