:: Malaysia Smelter Asia To Use China Tech For Sarawak Proj

Malaysia's Smelter Asia has signed an agreement with China Aluminum International Engineering Corporation Ltd. for exclusive use of its technology for an aluminum smelter in eastern Sarawak state.

Privately-owned Smelter Asia will head a consortium of Malaysian companies in a bid to develop a proposed aluminum smelter in Sarawak, it said in a statement. It did not say who the other members of the consortium are. It expects to produce up to 600,000 metric tons of aluminum a year, it added. China Aluminum will provide and transfer its technology and support to Smelter Asia.

Smelter Asia is wholly-owned by GIIG Holdings, which is controlled by Malaysian businessman Syed Mokhtar Albukhary and Dubai businessman Mohamad Ali Alabbar.

China Aluminum is the country's sole aluminum smelting technology provider, and specializes in nonferrous metallurgy for aluminum and magnesium. It is a unit of Aluminum Corporation of China, the biggest stockholder of China's largest alumina and aluminum producer, Aluminum Corporation of China Ltd.
