:: Chinese Contract for Boliden

Boliden's AB's wholly-owned technology subsidiary Boliden Contech has signed a SK40 million contract with Chinese lead producer Western Mining. Under the terms of the contract, Boliden will construct and deliver equipment for a new smelter near the city of Xining in Quinghai Province. Boliden will also supervise the installation of the smelter equipment, and provide engineering and commissioning services.

Western Mining has been forced to close its existing simple, shaft-type furnaces for environmental reasons. The new smelter will be built around one of Boliden's Kaldo top-blown converter furnaces. The furnace allows the smelting, reduction and refining process to be undertaken in a single unit.

The Western Mining operation will have the capacity to produce 50,000 t/y of lead. In addition to lead, the furnace will be fitted with a condensing unit for sulphur dioxide, which will enable the smelter to produce sulphuric acid. The smelter is scheduled to be commissioned sometime in 2005. Western Mining currently operates several lead mines and two refineries.
