:: Norsk to Scale Down Norwegian Capacity

Norsk Hydro, the Norwegian energy, metals and fertiliser group and Europe's largest aluminium producer, is to phase out almost 25% of its 540,000 t/y aluminium smelting capacity in Norway. The company is being obliged to close down those operations which are still using outdated Soederberg technology because they do not meet environmental emissions standards. Three smelters rely on the technology but not for the whole of their production and none will shut down completely.
