:: Kvaerner Wins Leach Plant Contracts

Kvaerner has been selected by Phelps Dodge to design and construct a copper concentrate leach facility using innovative new technology developed by Phelps Dodge and Placer Dome. The demonstration plant, with a total value of $40 million, is located at the Bagdad mine, in north-central Arizona, US. Design and procurement will be conducted by Kvaerner's San Ramon, California office. Construction will be executed by Kvaerner Industrial Constructors (KIC).

"Kvaerner previously completed conceptual and feasibility studies for this exciting new technology, and we are pleased to be continuing our close involvement in this unique project," said Keith Henry, chief executive, Kvaerner E&C.

With design now underway, construction was scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2002. The facility is the first of its kind to be built in the Western Hemisphere and is designed to recover commercial-grade copper cathode from chalcopyrite concentrates. It will process 150 t/d of concentrate produced by the existing mill and flotation operation. At full capacity, it is expected to produce 35 Mlb/y of copper cathode from concentrate. The plant is designed to demonstrate at commercial scale the viability of the new hydrometallurgical technology. Flotation concentrates will be subjected to pressure leaching, and copper will be recovered through conventional SX-EW technology.
