:: New President for SA Mining Institute

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), which was founded in 1894, last week appointed Frank Egerton as its new president, at the institution's annual general meeting.

Egerton was born into a family with a history of five generations in mining and was educated in Johannesburg.

He joined the Union Corporation group in 1960, and remained with them as they developed into Gencor, then Genmin and, currently, Gold Fields.

He joined the SAIMM in 1966, and has served on the council since 1992.

During his induction speech last week, Egerton emphasised the importance of mechanisation of mining operations and how South African miners should continue to search for solutions to problems they may encounter with the mechanisation of mining.
