:: ITRI Appoints New Chairman from Yunnan Tin Group
ITRI, the international tin industry body, is pleased to announce that its next Chairman will be Mr Gao Wenxiang, General Manager of Yunnan Tin Group (Holding) Co., Ltd. The decision was agreed unanimously at the annual board meeting for ITRI member companies, which took place in London to coincide with London Metals Exchange week.
Mr Gao, in accepting the ITRI Chair, commented: “It is a great honour to take up this role. Yunnan Tin has been a member of ITRI since 2005 and fully endorses ITRI activities in building a strong, responsible, and sustainable tin industry. We will work as part of ITRI, both at international and regional level, to support the tin industry and to promote tin use. I am excited by this development and looking forward to the challenges ahead."
Mr Gao, who will initially serve as Chairman for a 2 year term, replaces Dato’ Seri Dr Mohd Ajib Anuar from Malaysian Smelting Corporation. Dato’ Ajib is a veteran of the tin industry having been involved in the business for more than 40 years. He was a founding member of ITRI, following its privatisation in 1995, and has served two terms as Chairman of ITRI, during the periods 2002-06 and 2012-14. Dato’ Ajib will remain involved with ITRI as an honorary independent Director.
Mr David Bishop, Chief Executive of ITRI, praising the contribution of Dato’ Ajib stated: “He has been one of the main driving forces behind ITRI and has contributed hugely to the vision and strategies of the organisation. Under his leadership ITRI has been transformed into a proactive and highly effective tin association which represents a modern and forward thinking industry."
Dato’ Ajib was instrumental in forging stronger links between ITRI and the Chinese tin industry and he believes now is the time for Yunnan Tin Group to assume a higher profile and a leadership role in the organisation. Dato’ Ajib commented:
“China is the world’s largest tin producing country and the most important market for the metal. The future prosperity of the industry is tied very closely to China and so it is a fitting time for Yunnan Tin Group, the world’s largest producer, to assume a prominent role within ITRI. ITRI has established a strong presence in China and with support from Yunnan Tin will develop a programme of activities to expand membership and support development of the Chinese market. I strongly support the appointment of Mr Gao."
ITRI has had a presence in China since 2009 when it opened its office in Beijing. Initially set up to promote better information flows, ITRI China is now actively engaged in building industry networks and working on collaborative initiatives to expand tin use. A recent example of this was the Solder Technology seminar and exhibition in Shenzhen in August organised jointly with IPC, which was attended by more than 150 delegates. A major China-International Tin Forum in Shanghai is planned in May 2015.
