:: Jan Leja (1918-2009)

Jan Leja was born in Grodzisko, Poland (27/05/1918), passing in Victoria, BC, Canada (04/11/2009)

During World War II he was arrested while defending his country. In a concentration camp he spent his time reading, studying languages, mathematics, and sciences. Later he joined the Imperial College, in London, receiving a Ph.D. degree under the supervision of Prof. Schulman, investigating "molecular interactions at solid-liquid interfaces". In London he met his wife Mary, an outstanding woman who was with him for the rest of his life. Moving to Canada, Janek lectured at the University of Alberta, and in 1963 was hired by the University of British Columbia, retiring in 1983. His major contribution, as one of the most erudite mineral processors, was the book Surface Chemistry of Froth Flotation. This book represents much more than a contribution to the fields of surface chemistry and froth flotation. It is the key to the understanding of froth flotation fundamentals and applications at the light of surface chemistry.
