:: Frank Letowski (1933-2012)

I am sorry to announce the death of a good friend and a distinguished hydrometallurgist Franciszek Letowski, known to his friends as Frank. He was born on February 12, 1933 in Vilnius (formerly Poland now Lithuania). He was Professor of hydrometallurgy at Polytechnic Institute in Wroclaw, Poland (formerly Breslau, Germany). He then taught at Alaska University in Fairbanks, Alaska, USA and at the Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa. On his return to Poland he was associated with the copper company CUPRUM in Lubin.

Letowski had many co-workers in Poland. He published the first Polish book on hydrometallurgy, “Podstawy hydrometalurgii” in 1957 (Basis of Hydrometallurgy) [Publisher: Wydawnictwa Naukowo-Techniczne, Warsaw] followed by, " Hydrometalurgia krajowych surowców miedzi” in 1959 (Hydrometallurgy of National Copper Raw Material) [Publisher: Wydaw. PW, Wroclaw]. He wrote also many original papers on the hydrometallurgy of copper. He passed away on September 18, 2012. He is survived by his wife Kashka and his son Jarek who is now in the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec, Canada. He will be missed by many friends.
