:: Major New Role for University of Alberta's Zhenghe Xu



Prof. Zhenghe Xu has been associated with the University of Alberta for many years, and currently has 20 PhD students under his supervision. He has now taken leave of absence for 2 years to continue supervising his students. while taking up a full-time appointment at China's first university to teach solely in English, the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen.

Shenzhen is a young and rapidly growing metropolitan city, mainly built on hi-tech and low carbon enterprises, advanced financial service industry, broadband network, and compact logistics network.


SUSTech is a public university fully funded by Shenzhen Municipality. It was established in 2011 with a commitment to pilot Chinese higher education reform. The university runs similar systems as in North America, including credit system for U/G students, and a tenure system for faculty members. The College of Engineering (CoE) at SUSTech was founded in December 2015, and has 13 undergraduate programs in 8 Departments, including Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Environment Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical and Energy Engineering, Mechanics and Aeronautics, and Ocean Science and Technology. Prof Xu's position at SUSTech is the Dean of College of Engineering and he is very excited to be a part of the experience on building a college of engineering that meets the needs of tomorrow.
