:: Vladimir N. Mackiw (1923-2001)

Vladimir Nicolas Mackiw, a distinguished hydrometallurgist and a leading administrator, passed away on January 31, 2001.

Born in Stanislawiw, Western Ukraine, September 4, 1923, Dr. Mackiw obtained a diploma in chemistry from the University of Breslau in Germany (now Wroclaw in Poland), and a M.Sc. from the University ofErlangen, Germany He completed his post-graduate studies at the University of Louvain in Belgium, in 1948. That year he immigrated to Canada, where he worked for a year as a chemist with Lingman Lake Gold Mines in Winnipeg. The following year he joined the Manitoba Provincial Bureau of Mines, and then a special project operated by Sherritt Gordon Mines, with which he was to remain employed until his retirement in 1988.
