:: Gekko Founders Win Entrepreneur of the Year Award

As the first and only truly global award of its kind, Entrepreneur Of The Year celebrates entrepreneurs who build and lead successful and dynamic businesses, recognising them through regional, national and global award programs in over 100 cities and more than 40 countries. The international recognition of the awards positions winners as world-class entrepreneurs and provides a benchmark for entrepreneurial excellence. Winners are much-admired leaders in their industries and important role models.

Sandy Gray and Elizabeth Lewis-Gray of Gekko Systems were this month announced as winners of the Technology, Communications, E-Commerce & Life Sciences section in the Southern Region Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards held at Melbourne’s Sofitel Hotel on the 1st of September.

Today Gekko mineral recovery systems are helping to improve the environmental and economic performance of mines operated by some of the biggest names in the business including De Beers, Anglo-Gold, Gold Fields, Barrick and Placer Dome. They provide gravity separation and intensive leach systems in gold, sulphides, native copper, diamonds, garnets, slags, tantalum and tin mines.

After a rigorous nomination and interview process with each of the Entrepreneur Of The Year finalists within the Southern Region, an independent judging panel consisting of some of this State’s most successful business leaders had the difficult task of choosing just four category winners out of 15 finalists.

The independent judging panels considered each Entrepreneur Of The Year award nominee against the following criteria and will be looking for information that supports and demonstrates examples and evidence of each.

  • Entrepreneurial Spirit
  • Innovation
  • Personal Integrity/Influence
  • Strategic Direction
  • National/Global Impact

In selecting Gekko Systems, the judges commented "Elizabeth and Sandy are impressive in that they have come up with a incredibly innovate offering by combining their abilities to invent a product, produce it and then create a business to distribute and sell it globally. Gekko Systems has created a global niche business, which is not an easy thing to do from regional Victoria. They have a strong international strategy for growth in both the short and long term."

Ms Lewis-Gray said that "Sandy and I were excited to have been finalist in the Entrepreneur Of The Year and we were thrilled when we were announced as the winners. The quality of the candidates in all categories were outstanding."

The Southern Region winners will now go on, with winners from four other regions, to vie for the national Entrepreneur Of The Year titles which take place in Sydney in November this year. At the Entrepreneur Of The Year National Award Ceremony a national winner in each category will be announced and from those, one overall winner will be selected as the Australian Entrepreneur Of The Year. The winner will then represent Australia at World Entrepreneur Of The Year in Monte Carlo in June 2006.
