:: Young Persons' Lecture Competition Brazil Final

The Brazil Young Persons' Lecture Competition National final was held on Thursday 24 April in São Paulo. The winning lecture, Characterising Surface Fragmentation for Comminution Modelling, was given by Daniel M Francioli, a Materials Engineering undergraduate student from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

The event was judged by Jan Lewis, Past President and Chair of the IOM3 Managing Board, Rogério Contato Guimarães, Superintendent of Process and Management Systems for Companhia Brasiliera de Metálurgia e Mineração (CBMM), and Ronaldo Antônio Neves Marques Barbosa, Associate Professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.

The local heat was organised by the World Lecture Competition's main sponsor, CBMM, and the featured presentations covered a variety of subjects including cast alloys in dental prosthesis, stainless steel characterisation, graphene, waste in mining, polyester matrix composites and swimming behaviour of water fleas.

All finalists will enjoy a trip to Araxá to visit the CBMM mine. Daniel will represent Brazil at the Young Persons' World Lecture Competition final, held in Riverside, California in October.
