:: Copper from lead

Australian furnace specialist Ausmelt Ltd has secured a contract for the construction of an Ausmelt furnace for Korea Zinc's zinc-lead smelting and refining complex at Onsan in South Korea. The furnace will be Onsan's seventh Ausmelt unit, and will be used to treat secondary copper materials including dross produced by the existing operations at Onsan. According to Ausmelt, this application is the first of its kind for an Ausmelt furnace, and represents a new market for the technology in processing copper dross from lead refineries and smelters around the world.

The six existing Ausmelt furnaces at Onsan are used to treat a range of zinc slags and residues, as well as secondary lead materials. Korea Zinc also plans to install a further Ausmelt furnace at its Sun Metals operation at Townsville in Australia. Ausmelt's managing director, Paul Abbot, said: "We are delighted at Korea Zinc's continued support of Ausmelt technology in its push to provide superior treatment of industrial by-products and waste materials. This project for copper dross follows finalisation of our marketing agreement with Korea Zinc, aimed at securing the first project for treatment of toxic municipal waste incinerator ash."
