:: Mintek Innovation Gains Global Acceptance

Mintek, SA's national minerals technology organisation, has sold two charcoal-regeneration furnaces to a gold mine in Peru. This brings to 12 the number of Minfurn furnaces, developed by Mintek, that have been exported. A further two were sold in SA.

The R1m furnaces, each with a production capacity of a ton a day, are being built at Mintek, and will be shipped to Santa Rosa gold mine at the end of next month.

Charcoal is used in the gold industry worldwide to recover gold from solution. In time the charcoal becomes contaminated by organic materials and loses some of its ability to absorb gold, leading to a decrease in recovery. High-temperature regeneration decomposes organic matter and restores the original activity of the charcoal. "The Minfurn employs a novel heating method, direct resistive heating, in which an electrical current is applied to the carbon (charcoal) bed in the furnace, causing it to act as a heating element," said Mintek. "Compared with conventional regeneration equipment, the Minfurn is simpler, with fewer moving parts, and is more energy efficient."
