:: Ausmelt Wins Russian Copper Plant Contract

Ausmelt Limited has signed a contract to provide Ausmelt Technology for the modernization of an existing copper smelter at the town of Karabash in Cheliabinsk region in the Urals of Russia.

Engineering design for a new Ausmelt furnace and an electric settling furnace will commence immediately and the new plant is scheduled to start up in the second half of 2004.

The plant modernization is largely driven by an environmental imperative. The adoption of Ausmelt technology together with the recently installed gas cleaning equipment and acid plant will dramatically improve sulphur capture and reduce dust emissions in Karabash.

The new plant will process approximately 460,000 tonnes a year of local feed material to produce copper matte to be refined in the existing modern refinery.

Ausmelt's Managing Director, Mr Paul Abbott, said "We recognize Russia as a key emerging growth market for non-ferrous metals, particularly copper. Ausmelt is delighted to have signed such a significant contract in this region. We see high potential for further opportunities in Russia for Ausmelt Technology over the next few years and are confident that this project will provide a solid platform from which to build. The contract is financially significant to Ausmelt and is one of the largest in the history of the company. Securing another contract so soon after the Hindustan Zinc Limited lead project in India in April this year will provide us with a healthy start to the 2003/04 financial year."
