:: Tenova Pyromet Makes its Mark in Platinum Smelting
Having earned a reputation as a leader in the design and supply of large submerged-arc smelting furnaces and complete smelting plants for the production of ferroalloys, base metals, slag cleaning, and alloy refining, Tenova Pyromet is expanding its involvement in the platinum industry with vigour.
In fact Tenova Pyromet is currently working on several new projects, on which good progress is being made. A feasibility study for Eastplats - South Africa's sixth largest platinum group metals producer - is due to be submitted in December 2008. On client approval, Tenova Pyromet will continue with the refurbishment of the four Pyromet furnaces, with a total capacity of 7.4 MW to be commissioned in May 2010.
In another project that would double the slag cleaning capacity at Anglo Platinumís Waterval Smelter in Rustenberg, Tenova Pyromet completed detailed engineering for the plant and is in discussions with Anglo Platinum for the supply of various key components of the furnace.
This order is connected with a comprehensive feasibility study for the platinum giant developed by Tenova Pyromet in December 2007. The scope of the study included looking at a new 30 MVA slag cleaning furnace for Anglo Platinum's Waterval site.
Tenova Pyromet was the technical design partner for the original slag cleaning furnace; there have been significant improvements to the design of the first furnace, which was the first of its kind and was completed in 2002. These changes were aimed at improving operational and process control and also focused heavily on improving safety, health and environmental aspects of the process.
Key developments include an updated electrode column, an updated copper cooler design and a new granulation system. Anglo's Slag Cleaning Furnace One is being upgraded in parallel with Slag Cleaning Furnace 2, using some of the more recent developments.
As new PGM smelting companies emerge and the existing ones continue to expand, Tenova Pyromet is gearing up for numerous work on the PGM side in South Africa and the rest of Africa.
