:: HIsmelt® Contract for Outokumpu

Outokumpu Technology Oy has been awarded a contract to design, and build a circulating fluidised bed pre-heater (reactor) for the world's first commercial installation of a HIsmelt® plant at Kwinana in Western Australia. The pre-heater contract is worth 26 million and is scheduled for completion within 22 months.

According to Outokumpu, the pre-heater will use natural gas or off-gas from the Hismelt unit to heat iron-ore fines prior totheir injection into a bath of molten iron along with ordinary thermal coal. The pre-heater is a circulating fluidised bed unit, which operates at higher fluidising gas velocities. Outokumpu says that this results in an expanded solids bed offering unproved solids mixing and heat and mass transfer. The company says that the higher fluidised velocities result in increased solids entrainment. The entrained solids are recycled back into the pre-heater via a recycling cyclone.
