:: Outokumpu Flash Smelting Process received ASM Historical Landmark Award

The Outokumpu Flash Smelting Process was awarded an ASM Historical Landmark Award by ASM International, The Material Information Society, at the 10th International Flash Smelting Congress which was held in Finland on June 24-29, 2002.

The ASM Historical Landmark Award is granted to identify permanently the sites and events that have played a prominent part in the discovery, development and growth of metals and metalworking. The historical importance of the Flash Smelting technology lies in its economic impact on the materials world and its positive impact on the global environment. Outokumpu's Flash Smelting technology has earlier been named by EU as the Best Available Technique (BAT) that achieves the best environmental standards in industrial production.

"In 1949 Outokumpu introduced autogenous flash smelting of copper concentrates at their facility in Harjavalta, Finland. The process has become a primary means of copper and nickel production worldwide and the model for copper smelting activities throughout the world", said Dr Hans Portisch, Past President of ASM International, in his award lecture at the opening of the 10th International Flash Smelting Congress.

"Innovation has been Outokumpu's driving force throughout its history, and it will be so in the future as well", emphasized Dr Jyrki Juusela, CEO of Outokumpu, in his opening speech at the Congress. Dr Werner Marnette, CEO of Norddeutsche Affinerie AG, gave his visions about the future of the copper smelting business. "The fragmentation of the copper industry between mines, copper producers and copper processors must be urgently overcome and each individual link in the entire value added chain must become more market and performance-oriented", he said.
