The present volume is the proceedings of a symposium organized by the Refractory Ceramics Division of the American Ceramic Society, the Canadian Ceramic Society, and the Materials Science Engineering Section of the Metallurgical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum and held in Hamilton, Ontario, August 22-25, 2004, during the 43rd Annual Conference of Metallurgists.

It is composed of 73 papers, originating from 20 different countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Dominican Republic, England, France, Germany, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Turkey, and USA. The wealth of information in this volume reflects the importance of refractories for the metallurgical industries, worldwide.

The papers are organized under 5 topics: steelmaking (12 papers), aluminum (18 papers), copper (12 papers), castables (5 papers), and basic science (19 papers). In addition there is a section (7 papers) devoted to the University of Missouri-Rolla-CIREP, École Polytechnique 2nd meeting, allowing the graduate students of the two institutions to meet and exchange among each others and with their elderly. Three papers, however, were printed as abstracts only. The volume is a welcome addition to the library. The editors are with the École Polytechnique in Montreal, Canada.
