SME Outstanding Student Paper Contest

Each year the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) sponsors two Outstanding Student Paper Contests, an Undergraduate Division contest and a Graduate Division contest. The Undergraduate Division is open only to SME Student Members. The Graduate Division is open to all members of SME working toward an advanced degree.

Each division winner is awarded $500, a certificate of recognition, a travel allowance up to $250 to attend the SME annual meeting, and one ticket to the Awards Banquet where the cash award and certificate are presented. The winners are also acknowledged in Mining Engineering magazine, and the winning paper is considered for publication in the magazine.

To be eligible for the contest, the paper must be submitted by the student's faculty advisor and received by December 6. Please read and adhere to the guidelines found here.
