This, the 2nd International Symposium on Ultrafine Grinding (Ultrafine Grinding 2008), is organised by Minerals Engineering International and sponsored by PMT-Jetmill, JKTech and Sigmund Lindner.

This conference immediately follows on from Crushers and High-Pressure Grinding Rolls 08 (June 16) and Grinding Mills 08 (June 17-18). The three conferences together form Comminution 08, the proceedings of which will be published on CD-ROM, and selected papers, after peer-review, will be published in a special Comminution issue of Minerals Engineering journal.

Many modern ore deposits are fine-grained and complex, requiring ultrafine grinding.

For some ores, adequate liberation of values is obtained only after grinding to sizes less than 20 microns, and sometimes much less.

Grinding to sizes as fine as this is inefficient and uneconomic in ball mills, and mining companies are now having to assess alternative technology, such as stirred milling.

Such technology has been in use for some time in other industries, such as chemicals and pharmaceuticals, and the aim of this meeting is to bring together scientists and engineers from different disciplines, to discuss common aims and problems.

Papers are invited, therefore, not only from the minerals industry, but also from any industry employing ultrafine grinding methods.

Day 1 will be directed at the coarser end of fine grinding (20 to 100µm), and day 2 at ultrafine grinding (sub 20µm).

  • How coarse can we go – replacing ball mills
  • Media wear
  • Economic incorporation into circuits
