This, the 4th International Symposium on Precious Metals (Precious Metals '12), was organised by Minerals Engineering International in consultation with Dr Mike Adams and was sponsored by Implats, Newmont Mining Corporation, Barrick Gold Corporation & Gold and Minerals Gazette.

Themes of Precious Metals '12

Precious Metals '12 dealt with all aspects of the processing of gold, silver and PGM ores, such as flotation, bio and hydrometallurgy and the associated environmental issues.

Keynote Lectures


The Keynote Lecture "Metallurgical Challenges Facing the Gold Mining Industry" was given by Dr. Rob Dunne, the Group Executive - Metallurgical Innovation for Newmont Mining Corporation who has recently moved from his previous position of Group Executive-Metallurgy Development and Technology and is based in Denver, Colorado, USA. He is a graduate of the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa and is an Adjunct Professor at the JKMRC, Brisbane, Australia.

Over the last 30 years Robert has worked for a number of mining companies including Anglo American, Anglovaal and Newcrest Mining and also spent time at the Western Australian School of Mines lecturing and at Mintek where he was involved in introducing new technologies into the mining industry.

The Keynote Lecture "Processing of South African Platinum Ores" was presented by Keith Liddell. Keith has extensive experience in the financing, development and operation of resource projects and has worked in the platinum industry since 1981, starting at Mintek as Group Leader Precious Metals, with a focus on PGMs and refractory gold. He received three Mintek silver medals for his contribution to the development of platinum concentrators at Western Platinum and Crocodile River.

As the former Managing Director of Aquarius Platinum Limited, he developed the Kroondal Platinum Mine as the lowest cost producer in the industry using innovative mining and processing methods. He is currently deputy Chairman of Platmin Ltd, which operates the Pilanesberg Platinum Mine.

The conference was organized by Minerals Engineering International (MEI) in consultation with Dr Mike Adams.

Mike Adams is Consulting Metallurgist and Director of Mutis Liber Pty Ltd and assists the resource sector with process, flowsheet and testhreerk design and management, plant assessment and simulation modelling.

Mike completed BSc(Hons), MSc, PhD and DSc(Eng) degrees at Witwatersrand University, and subsequently held technical leadership roles at Mintek in South Africa and SGS Lakefield Oretest in Perth.

Over almost thirty years he has published about 60 papers, many concerning gold processing and has edited three books, the latest being Advances in Gold Ore Processing, published by Elsevier in 2005.

Mike has been awarded Fellow status by the Australian and the South African Institutes of Mining and Metallurgy, and the Raikes gold medal by the South African Chemical Institute.

He has project managed several integrated pilot-plant campaigns for definitive feasibility studies on the processing of nickel laterites and sulfides and has consulted widely in the area of gold, platinum group and rare metals extractive metallurgy. He is currently also Director of Bright Phase Pty Ltd.
